How To Choose a Reliable ISP

Type Of Service- What type of Internet access does the Internet Service Provider(ISP) provide? At this point in time, there are two types of service that most folks would consider for home use: Telephone connections (traditional modem access), and Broadband connections (including DSL service and Cable Modem service).

Traditional modem access - This is the type of service in which you have an internal or external modem connected to your computer via a serial cable, and you initiate a call to the ISP whenever you want to use the Internet. Maximum speed with this type of connection is usually 56,000 bps.

DSL service - This is a newer service than the traditional modem access described above. With this service, you still have a modem connected to your computer, but the modem is usually supplied by the ISP, and the modem connects to your computer using an Ethernet cable instead of a serial cable as above. Once you are connected, you remain connected, and do not have to disconnect and reconnect each time you wish to access the Internet. The connection is made using your existing telephone line, but your network access does not interfere with your use of the phone for voice calls. In other words, with DSL service, you can access the Internet and use the phone for voice communication at the same time, without interference. Maximum speed varies, and is dependant on a variety of factors.

Cable Modem Service - This service is very much like DSL service in that it is a persistent connection, and connects to your computer using an Ethernet cable. The big difference is that the connection is made through your Cable TV cable, not your telephone line, as is the case with the DSL service. The fastest and most reliable of the three.

Broadband Satellite Internet - Satellite Internet services are used in locations where terrestrial Internet access is not available and in locations which move frequently. Internet access via satellite is available globally, including vessels at sea. There are three types of satellite Internet service: * one-way multicast, * one-way with terrestrial return, and * two-way satellite access.

Your main concern when choosing an internet service provider (isp)should be reliability. There is nothing worse than getting continuous busy signals or just a flat out downed server when trying to connect. You also want a company with exceptional tech support. You absolutely MUST choose a company that offers FREE tech support 24/7. My recommendation is to get high-speed internet access if it's in your budget. You will be spending a lot of time navigating the internet, so you might as well make it a pleasant experience.

Currently I use Cox Cable Internet and I am extremely happy with the service. I don't have to worry about busy signals anymore. When you subscribe to Cox you get 7 email addresses, each email address comes with 10 megs of web/storage space! That's a total of 70 megs! Cox also has 24/7, toll-free tech support. You can manage your account online, create email addresses, web pages, change passwords etc. All this can be done online and the changes are made instantly. The download/upload speed is incredible! I download a lot of files, for instance it only takes me a matter of seconds to grab a 7 meg file, when I had dial-up it would have taken 30-40 minutes and sometimes with dial-up I would get disconnected during a long download then I'd have to start all over. I don't have those problems anymore. Cable, DSL and Satellite are considerably faster than dial-up and I highly recommend looking into it.

I've used some dial-up services that were fast and dependable too, so don't be overly concerned, your main objective is to get connected (or switch) to a reliable ISP.
